Your Hot Water Comes Out in Spurts of Hot and Cold
If you’ve been noticing that your hot water sometimes runs hot and other times cold, even though it’s set to the same temperature each time for consistency, there may be some dirt in the tank. Sediment builds up fast when hard-water conditions prevail or if anode rods wear out over time because less space is available for heating elements to generate heat from their boil process.
Your Hot Water Runs Out After a Short Period of Time
Most water heaters have two heating elements: one at the top, and another that heats all of your stored hot water. The first element re-heats the water at the top of the tank. The bottom heats all of your stored water, to keep a constant hot temperature.
Your water heater might be sending you unheated water instead of heating the small quantity it should if one or more bottom elements fail. When this happens, your tank relies on top heaters for all its supply needs and when that runs out, your water heater will send you unheated water instead.
Your Water Never Gets Above a Lukewarm Temperature
The water heater’s dip tube is a very important part of the system, as it pushes cold water to the bottom of the tank. Should your dip tube become corroded or breaks then all the replacement cold water added to the tank mixes with the hot water that is already inside. As a result, you get a lukewarm mixture of hot and cold water.
Should you discover small chunks of plastic in your showerhead, then your dip tube may be broken. It’s best to take off your shower head and look for debris.
Your Hot Water Runs Out Before You Are Finished with It

Conventional tanks can only supply an amount equivalent to the size of their storage tank, which means if you use more than what’s available (and let’s face it – most people end up doing this), then they spend 20-30 minutes reheating new batches before beginning again with another round for themselves and any guests or members who may be using that shower moment as theirs alone!
If your water heater is too small for your needs, you’ll have to replace it with a bigger one.
You Aren’t Getting Any Hot Water at All
Did you know that your water heater has a thermostat, just like any other? You tell it how hot your water is, and your water will heat to the set temperature. If you’re noticing that your hot water is not working properly, then it’s possible the thermostat has malfunctioned and needs to be reset. Simply reset to the heat you want, then try resetting again.
