Celebrate Earth Day, Start Saving Water today!

Celebrate Earth Day today by making some small changes to the way you use your household water.

Below Solutions Plumbing & Heating give a ten step guide on how to minimise the amount of water we waste.

1. Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth. Water comes out of the average faucet at 12-18 litres per minute. Don’t let all that water go down the drain while you brush! Turn off the tap until its time to rinse.

2. Get the most out of cleaning your clothes and dishes by making sure that the washing machine and dishwasher are completely full before starting a new load.

3. Install a water butt to your drainpipe and use the water collected to water your plants, clean your car and wash your windows.

4. Don’t over water your garden. Never keep the hose running. This ensure healthy plants and saves water.

5. Fix leaking taps. This is one of the biggest water wasters out there!

6. Cut your showers short. An eight minute shower will typically use 62 litres of water. An average bath will use 80 litres of water!

7. Never put water down the drain when there may be another use for it such as watering a plant or garden, or cleaning.

8. Insulate your water pipes. You’ll get hot water faster plus avoid wasting water while it heats up.

9. Install a water metre. Water metres let you calculate your household water use.

10. Toilet use about 13 litres per flush. Look for dual flush toilets if installing a new one. They give you an option of a small flush or a large flush for cleaning the toilet bowl.
