Based in the Southwest of London, Wimbledon is a famous place, known across the world as the home of one particular tennis tournament. But Wimbledon has much more to offer than tennis. Wimbledon Common

Believe it or not, Wimbledon common is the largest green space in London by a long shot, with over 1000 acres of heathland, it provides a vast amount of space. Perfect for when you need to escape the hustle and bustle of the city streets. One end reaches Putney Heath and the other is Richmond Park, showing just how large this countryside inside the city is.

Public footpaths run all the way through the common, around it and winding in between, you can literally spend days walking, cycling or running the paths. Famously the home of the Wombles, it is one of the best places to meet friends, play sports and have fun. All while forgetting you are in London.

Wat Buddhapadipa

The very first Thai Buddhist temple that was built in the UK can be found a short stroll away from Wimbledon Common just to the east. For those of you who enjoy historical and religious buildings the Wat Buddhapadipa has beautiful, crisp white walls, adorned with a red and gold roof, you will find yourself thinking you are far away from London.

Finding itself in its current site in 1796, the temple still has resident monks, but you are more than welcome to go and visit the temple, although you have to follow the rules and etiquette when walking around its wooded grounds and also inside the temple.

It is sacred ground after all, but from there you can find yourself taking a couple of minute of reflection time at the lake, enjoying the sounds of the stream whilst the temple is in your view. It truly is breathtaking.

Horseback Around The Park

One thing you will notice around Wimbledon is that it is an affluent place, it is known for being one of the high-class areas of London, so of course, there is horse riding in the diary for when you visit.

Wimbledon Common and Richmond Park combined to make one of the best green spaces in London for those who can ride horses, you could go out on a hack for hours, enjoying the beauty that Wimbledon has to offer. Hosting the oldest stables on record, Wimbledon stables is able to offer to ride lessons to members and non-members 7 days a week.

Wimbledon Farmers Market

Who doesn’t love a farmers market? Well, here in Wimbledon it trades every Saturday morning out of Wimbledon Park Primary School, founded in 2000 it continually brings home awards every year for the high-quality products and goods for sale.

Every week the offerings change as the market is based on seasonal produce, so the stallholders only provide fruit and veg they can get in season, perfect for root veggies in the winter for delicious broths and stews and fruits in the summer for cocktails and puddings.

Along with produce stalls, the market boasts some of the finest butchers in London, again, seasonal meats are offered every Saturday, the market takes great pride in only offering what is naturally available.

If the wide variety of food options isn’t enough to entice you to the farmers market, you will also find beautiful British grown flowers, highlighting British grown is one of the main factors of the farmers market, shop local, stay local is the motto.

New Wimbledon Theatre

West End is one of the most famous reasons to visit London and Wimbledon has not missed out, based on Broadway, New Wimbledon Theatre is a grade two listed building that is a theatre from the Edwardian times.

The New Wimbledon Theatre is a great place to visit for live entertainment, music, plays and of course theatre. It is an eclectic theatre that has lots of character and quirks, you will love it. Not far away is also The Polka Children’s Theatre, dating back to 1967, it hosts performances for kids up to the age of 13. Focusing on performances for babies, toddlers and small children makes it great for young families.

More Than Just Tennis

Wimbledon town is a true gem in the city of London, and it really does have more to it than just tennis. Obviously, Wimbledon does bring thousands of visitors to the area every year for the competition the area has become famous for, but there is so much more to do.
